Obsidian Group Inc. Donates Over $40,000 to Toddler with Cerebral Palsy for Life-Changing Surgery

MISSISSAUGA,ON-July 13,2015-Serendipity is a fortunate coincidence, and there’s no better word to explain how Gus Karamountzos, CEO of the family-run Obsidian Group Inc., and his wife Helen happened to learn about three-year-old Bentley Mitchell’s plight the day before his company’s 9th annual charity golf tournament.

By the day after, Bentley’s family had a $40,100 donation to deposit.

Bentley has Cerebral Palsy, a condition that’s left him unable to walk on his own. A specialist in St. Louis can perform a surgery in December that could change all that, letting him play hockey with his brothers and grow up without a cane or walker. But the cost is $100,000.

“Like many kids his age, Bentley plays soccer, rides a bike, prints his name and is constantly asking questions. The only thing he hasn’t mastered is independent walking—and that will happen because of Gus and Helen’s belief in Bentley and a life-changing surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy,” says his mom Melissa, a Guelph resident who’d already raised over $16,000 through GoFundMe.com/BentleysJourney previously.

The Obsidian Group Inc., which owns Crabby Joe's Tap & Grill, Coffee Culture Cafe & Eatery and Union Burger, has previously donated over $250,000 to London Health Science Foundation's Access Cancer Therapies Now (ACT Now) patient assistance fund, among other donations.

Being parents and new grandparents themselves, Gus and Helen were so moved by Global News’ story about Bentley that they decided this year he would get the full $30,000 raised. But it didn’t stop there. Inspired friends, family members and guests at the tournament started writing more cheques, including one for $5,000, and soon the grand total had reached $40,100.

“One week ago, the goal of reaching $100,000 seemed insurmountable and today it seems possible,” says Melissa. “In the moment, and even now, I am in shock of the generosity and selflessness of complete strangers. I am forever grateful to the Karamountzos family for their substantial donation and for giving me the once in a lifetime chance to see my son walk for the first time.”

Though serendipity brought Bentley’s goal within reach, the company knows that now is not the time to leave the rest to chance.

“We’re going to follow Bentley’s journey on our social media accounts throughout the year and encourage people to participate and donate,” says Obsidian VP Peter Karamountzos, “so we can continue helping his family reach their $100,000 goal.”
